The Client

Timberline Bathroom Products is a family owned Australian business offering the highest quality Australian manufactured product together with outstanding customer service. Operating in a highly competitive market, they work to ensure that every item their customers receive is in the first-class condition that it left the factory. Innovation is the key and one that has proven the test of time is the Super Crate, capable of holding a commercial vehicle, the box the goods are shipped in.


The Challenge

Timberline’s manufacturing plant is in Armidale, the New England Region of NSW. Distance to major distribution centres and not being on a major freight line is a challenge to gain the best freight rates. Freight is a considerable cost to Timberline, and the CFO was concerned that they were not getting the best rates possible for the service levels that they required.


The Scenario

With 31,000 shipments each year of varying sizes and weights averaging 60 kilograms, the risk of damage during shipment is high. To minimise this risk, the client required the freight company to load the goods at the factory, necessitating a trailer and staff member on site every day.

The service level provided by the freight company’s local staff was excellent, perhaps due to Timberline being the most significant freight client in Armidale. There were however significant and ongoing challenges with the support and service received from Head Office.


The Solution

After a thorough review, the business was taken to market. Timberline continued with their supplier at reduced rates. Importantly trans-shipments between Sydney and Brisbane were eliminated, and an increased frequency for goods directly shipped to Melbourne was also achieved. Service support levels were also improved utilising the freight company’s local staff who championed Timberline’s needs on a national level.
